What you need
- The printer’s control panel or the manufacturer’s printer app
- Plain white paper for test pages
- Spare ink cartridges or a toner cartridge, if levels are low
- The printer’s manual or the manufacturer’s support site
Quick answer
Most print quality problems come from low ink or toner, a print setting such as draft mode, or, on inkjet printers, dried ink blocking the tiny nozzles in the print head. Check the ink or toner level, set the print quality and paper type correctly, then run the printer’s built-in nozzle check and cleaning tools. This guide is for anyone whose pages come out faded, streaky, patchy or blank on a home or office printer.
Before you start
First, find out whether you have an inkjet printer (uses liquid ink cartridges or ink tanks) or a laser printer (uses powder called toner). The fixes are different, and your manual or the label on the printer will tell you.
Then do these quick checks:
- Print a page you know is fine, such as a simple text document, to rule out a problem with one file.
- Check ink or toner levels on the printer’s screen, in the manufacturer’s app, or in the printer’s settings on your computer.
- If you just installed a new cartridge, make sure you removed all protective tape and plastic, as the cartridge instructions describe.
- Use plain, dry, good-quality paper for testing, loaded with the correct side facing up or down as marked on the tray.
Keep laser toner away from your face, and don’t open or shake a toner cartridge harder than the instructions say. If toner spills, wipe it up with a damp paper towel rather than blowing it around.
Check settings and supplies first
These steps cost nothing and fix many faded or patchy prints:
- Open the document and choose Print.
- Open the printer’s properties or options. On Windows 11 this is usually a Printer properties or Preferences button in the print window. On a Mac, look for the quality and paper settings in the print dialog, sometimes under a pop-up menu that shows Media & Quality or similar.
- Set print quality to Normal or Best instead of Draft, Fast or Economy.
- Turn off any toner-saving or ink-saving mode, if your printer has one.
- Choose the paper type that matches what’s in the tray. Printing on plain paper with a photo paper setting, or the other way round, often causes smudges or pale colors.
- Print the page again.
If the problem stays, replace any cartridge that shows low or empty. Use cartridges made for your exact printer model, as listed in the manual or on the manufacturer’s support site.
Clean and align an inkjet print head
Inkjet printers spray ink through very small holes called nozzles. If the printer sits unused for a while, ink can dry in them and cause white lines, missing colors or faded areas. Most inkjet printers include maintenance tools to fix this. Where they live depends on the model: look for a menu called Maintenance, Tools, Setup or Printer Care on the control panel, or in the manufacturer’s app on your computer or phone. Check the manual for the exact steps.
- Run a nozzle check (sometimes called a print quality report or diagnostic page). It prints a pattern that shows which colors have gaps.
- If the pattern has gaps or missing lines, run one head cleaning cycle.
- Print the nozzle check again to see if it improved.
- Repeat cleaning only a few times, letting the printer rest between attempts if the manual suggests it. Each cleaning uses ink, so don’t run it over and over.
- If lines look jagged or text looks blurred, run the print head alignment tool and follow its instructions.
To prevent dried nozzles, print something small in color every week or so, and switch the printer off with its power button rather than at the wall. That lets it cap the print head properly.
Fix faded or streaky laser prints
Laser printers rarely clog, so faded or streaky pages usually point to the toner or the drum (the part that transfers toner onto the paper; on some models it’s built into the toner cartridge, on others it’s separate).
- Check whether the printer reports low toner.
- If toner is low, remove the cartridge and gently rock it side to side a few times to spread the toner, if your manual says this is fine for your model. Put it back and print again. This is only a short-term fix until you replace the cartridge.
- Look at the pattern of the problem. A light stripe down the same spot on every page often points to the toner cartridge or drum. Repeated marks at regular spacing down the page can mean a dirty or worn drum or roller.
- Use the printer’s cleaning page or cleaning mode, if it has one. Many laser printers offer this in a maintenance menu.
- If the manual says the drum is a separate part, check whether it’s due for replacement.
Don’t touch the drum surface or try to wipe it with cleaners. Fingerprints and scratches cause marks on every page.
If this does not work
Try these next steps, from easiest to hardest:
- Print from a different app or computer to rule out a software or driver problem.
- Update or reinstall the printer driver (the small program that lets your computer talk to the printer) from Windows Update, macOS updates or the manufacturer’s official support site. Our guide on how to install or update a printer driver safely explains how.
- Try a fresh pack of paper. Damp or very glossy paper can smear or refuse to absorb ink.
- Remove and reseat the cartridges, checking that each clicks into place.
- If you use refilled or third-party cartridges, try a new cartridge recommended by the manufacturer to see whether the cartridge is the cause.
- If pages come out completely blank, also check our guide on what to do when your printer won’t print.
When to get professional help
Contact the printer manufacturer’s support, or a qualified technician, if:
- Nozzle checks still show gaps after several cleaning cycles and a new cartridge.
- You see ink leaking inside the printer or onto the desk.
- Pages come out with toner that smears or rubs off easily. This can mean the fuser (the hot part that bonds toner to paper) has a problem, and it shouldn’t be handled by home users.
- The printer makes grinding noises or shows a hardware error.
- The printer is under warranty and the problem continues.
FAQ
Why are my prints faded even with a new cartridge?
Check that you removed all the protective tape, that draft or ink-saving mode is off, and that the paper type setting matches your paper. On inkjets, run a nozzle check, since dried nozzles can cause fading even with full cartridges.
How often should I clean the print head?
Only when you see a problem. Each cleaning cycle uses ink, so run one, check the result, and repeat just a few times at most.
Why are there white lines across my inkjet prints?
White horizontal lines usually mean some nozzles are blocked. Run a nozzle check and a cleaning cycle. If lines look uneven or doubled, run the alignment tool too.
Why does my printer print blank pages?
Common causes are an empty cartridge, tape left on a new cartridge, badly blocked nozzles, or the wrong document or printer selected. Check each one, starting with the cartridge.
Is it safe to shake a toner cartridge?
Gentle rocking is often recommended to spread toner, but only do it if your manual allows it for your model. Never open a toner cartridge, and keep loose toner away from your face.
